Yogyakarta, February 20, 2025 - The Department of Ethnomusicology, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta again shows its commitment to the preservation of traditional music by holding a Traditional Musical Instrument Workshop for Kinderstation Kindergarten students on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. The workshop, which will be held at the ISI Yogyakarta Ethnomusicology Department Campus, is intended for students with an age range of 1.5 to 6 years.
This activity will introduce four types of gamelan from various Nusantara traditions, namely Gamelan Gong Gede, Cetik, Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and Javanese Gamelan. Kinderstation Kindergarten students will get hands-on experience recognizing, touching, and playing various gamelan instruments under the guidance of lecturers and students of the Ethnomusicology Department of ISI Yogyakarta.
“Introducing traditional music from an early age is an important step in instilling a love for the nation's culture. Through this workshop, we hope to provide an initial foundation for children to appreciate the richness of the archipelago's music,” said the Head of the Ethnomusicology Department at ISI Yogyakarta.
This workshop is designed with fun and interactive learning methods, tailored to the characteristics of early childhood. In addition to introducing sounds and how to play musical instruments, this activity also aims to develop children's motor skills, musical sensitivity, and cultural intelligence.
Kinderstation's Principal welcomed the collaboration. “We are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn directly from traditional music experts. Arts and cultural education is an important part of our curriculum to shape the character of children who love and appreciate the nation's cultural heritage.”
The Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta continues to be committed to opening doors for the general public, including educational institutions, to get to know the richness of Indonesian traditional music through various community service programs.
