Yogyakarta The Ethnomusicology Department of the Faculty of Performing Arts (FSP) at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta hosted an academic visit from the Faculty of Arts and Design at Makassar State University (UNM). This activity is part of an effort to strengthen academic networks and broaden students' understanding of the diversity of Nusantara music traditions through forums for learning and knowledge exchange.
The visit to the Ethnomusicology Department at ISI Yogyakarta included several educational activities. These activities involved presentations on the department's profile, curriculum, and various academic and non-academic activities. During this session, participants gained insights into the learning process, research activities, community service, and the various national and international collaboration programs developed by the department.
Besides presentation sessions, the event was also enlivened with a traditional music workshop focusing on learning Kulintang, is a traditional musical instrument that developed in the Eastern Indonesia region. This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to get to know the musical characteristics of kulintang more closely, basic playing techniques, rhythmic patterns, and the instrument's role in the cultural life of its supporting communities.
Through guidance from lecturers and students of the Ethnomusicology Department, participants were invited to interact directly with kulintang instruments and practice various playing patterns in groups. The workshop atmosphere was interactive with high enthusiasm from participants who actively asked questions and tried playing the introduced instruments. This practical activity was not only a means of musical learning but also a space to understand the cultural values contained within Nusantara's musical traditions.
The chairman and the attending faculty representatives stated that academic visits of this kind play an important role in building relationships between higher education institutions for the arts. Besides being a platform for sharing experiences and knowledge, this activity also opens up opportunities for collaboration in the fields of education, research, and cultural development in the future.
For the Ethnomusicology Department at ISI Yogyakarta, the visit from the Faculty of Arts and Design at Makassar State University serves as a momentum to strengthen the institution's role as a space for cultural dialogue and scholarly exchange. The diverse backgrounds of the participants reflect a shared spirit in preserving, studying, and developing Indonesia's cultural heritage through academic approaches and artistic practice.
Through this activity, it is hoped that a closer relationship will be established between the two institutions and sustainable cooperation opportunities will be created. The academic meeting framed through traditional music learning proves that art can be a bridge that brings together various regions, broadens horizons, and strengthens appreciation for the cultural richness of the Nusantara.
