Ethnic and Modern Music Collaboration between Students: Nusantara Soundscape, Ethnic Music Exploration and Digital Creation for Young Generation
Yogyakarta, May 08, 2025 - The Ethnomusicology Department of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta will hold an ethnic music workshop and collaboration on May 7, 2025 with the State Senior High School 3 Yogyakarta. This activity aims to introduce ethnic music as part of a dynamic and relevant cultural identity. and provide direct experience to high school students in playing and creating ethnic music. This workshop is expected to be attended by 20-30 participants consisting of students from SMAN 3 Yogyakarta. The Ethnomusicology Department of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta is collaborating with students in organizing this workshop. The Nusantara Soundscape workshop will feature a series of presentations, discussions, watching traditional music performances, and collaborations of ethnic and modern music between students. Some of the main topics that will be discussed include Introduction to ethnic musical instruments (gamelan, angklung, sasando, etc.), basic techniques of playing ethnic musical instruments, ethnic music creation with digital technology (music applications, loops, and effects). The Ethnomusicology Department of Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta hopes that through this workshop students will gain new insights, and can become a creative platform for the younger generation to recognize and love ethnic music.
This activity is a series of the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka Program (MBKM), now changed to the Impact Campus Program which is independently organized by the Department of Ethnomusicology FSP ISI Yogyakarta. Through this activity, it aims to teach students to get to know the world of work, interact socially, and develop activity programs that have an impact on the younger generation to sustain the traditional music of the archipelago.
