Reviving the Arts in Mlese Klaten

Regional Art Development and Guidance Program (P3 Wilsen)

LPM ISI Yogyakarta in Mlese Village Gantiwarno Klaten Central Java

The Institute for Community Service (LPM) ISI Yogyakarta this year again organized the Art Area Development and Guidance Program (P3 Wilsen). The P3 Wilsen program was held on July 29 - August 30, 2024 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. One of the P3 Wilsen placement locations is in Mlese Village, Gantiwarno District, Klaten Regency, Central Java. The P3 Wilsen program in Mlese Village involved eight academic community lecturers and students from the Faculty of Performing Arts and Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta. The chief executive is Ribeth Nurvijayanto, S.Sn., M.A. from the Department of Ethnomusicology, as a member is Dra. W. Lies Apriani, M.Hum. Students involved in P3 Wilsen in Mlese Village include Mutiara Baudiva Naviera (Dance Department), Sangraka Mustofa (Dance Department), Melany Ellen Nugroho (Ethnomusicology Department), Alfonsus Dira Jalu (Ethnomusicology Department), Vito Widhiyatama (Performing Arts Education Study Program), and Yusri Kausari (Batik Craft Fashion Design Study Program). The P3 Wilsen program was deployed and withdrawn directly by the Head of the Community Service Institute Dr. Eli Irawati, S.Sn., M.A.

P3 Wilsen activities in Mlese Village, Gantiwarno Klaten involve several art communities spread across the village area. The fostered art groups include Karawitan and Batik PKK Mlese Village, Karawitan Muda-mudi Dusun Candi, Karawitan and Dance SD Negeri Mlese, Hadrah Dusun Candi, Dance children and adolescents Dusun Candi. The coaching includes providing dance materials, music, makeup and fashion for dance performances, batik and jumputuan batik making processes. The P3 Wilsen Program in Mlese Village produced several art outcomes that were performed on the 79th Republic of Indonesia Anniversary in Candi Hamlet on August 16, 2024 and the Mlese Village Healthy Way on August 25, 2024. The arts that were performed included Gugur Gunung Dance, Rancak Bhineka Dance, Ratoh Jaroe Dance, gending-gending lancaran Manyar Sewu, Gugur Gunung, and Mars 45. Other outputs include creating the “Senam Mlese Gumregah” dance and the prototype of the “Jagung Kacang” batik design as a distinctive identity of Mlese Village art.

Mlese Village Head Suparwata explained that Mlese Village actually has a strong and diverse cultural arts potential, but is currently “dormant”. Mlese Village, especially in Candi Hamlet, was in the past a village of “Trah Dalang” or famous puppeteer families in the Klaten region. The absence of regeneration and some puppeteer families moving out of town have caused the cessation of the existence of cultural arts in the hamlet. Another factor causing the slow development of cultural arts in Mlese Village is the Covid 19 pandemic several years ago, the rise of social media and online gambling. The Mlesa Village Government has made efforts to create programs and build supporting infrastructure for cultural arts activities, one of which is establishing the Mlese Village cultural park located in the Mlese Village Hall complex. The Mlese Village Government hopes that the P3 Wilsen program will be able to increase people's interest in loving local cultural arts, develop them into local identities, and can prosper the lives of residents.

Ribeth Nurvijayanto as the head of P3 Wilsen Mlese Village during the deployment in Candi Hamlet explained that P3 Wilsen provides a space for artistic and aesthetic expression to the people of Mlese Village. People of all ages and walks of life are invited to cultivate their creativity, taste, and passion through art media. In addition to producing art outcomes such as dance, karawitan, hadrah, and batik, the more important thing in this activity is to build harmonious relationships between residents. P3 Wilsen activities are one of the solutions offered to the community to overcome social problems in the community such as conflict resolution media, moral and ethical learning. In the future, the P3 Wilsen program in Mlese Village will not stop this year. This program can continue by targeting other untapped artistic potentials.

Several community leaders in Mlese Village welcomed the P3 Wilsen program, especially in Candi Hamlet. The people of Candi Hamlet consider that this program is very helpful for the community to rejuvenate in art activities, after decades of no art activities in a large scope in the hamlet. The community, especially the elders, were invited to recall past memories about their experiences. The art scene in their village was re-energized. “My village is dancing again”, that sentence can represent the expression and emotion of happiness of the people of Candi hamlet. Young and old, men and women from various social strata knit harmonization through art, momentarily forgetting the problems of life, and enjoying the aesthetics of popular art that is full of human values.
