Traditional Musical Instrument Workshop for SMAN 1 Kasokandel at Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta, February 13, 2025 - The Ethnomusicology Department of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta successfully organized a traditional musical instrument workshop for students of SMAN 1 Kasokandel on Thursday (13/2). The workshop was held at the Ethnomusicology Building of ISI Yogyakarta by introducing three types of traditional musical instruments: Talempong, Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and Javanese Gamelan.

This full-day event aims to introduce the richness of the archipelago's traditional music to the younger generation, especially the students of SMAN 1 Kasokandel. This workshop is also part of the effort to preserve and develop Indonesian traditional music.

“This workshop is a form of community service carried out by the Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta, as well as an effort to introduce the diversity of traditional musical instruments to the younger generation,” said the Head of the Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta in his speech.

The students of SMAN 1 Kasokandel got a first-hand opportunity to learn the basic techniques of playing Talempong from West Sumatra, Gamelan Gong Kebyar from Bali, and Javanese Gamelan. They were mentored directly by expert lecturers and final year students of the Ethnomusicology Department of ISI Yogyakarta.

“The enthusiasm of the students was very high. They not only learn to play the instruments, but also gain knowledge about the philosophy, history, and cultural values contained in each of these traditional musical instruments,” added the Workshop Coordinator.

The Head of SMAN 1 Kasokandel expressed his high appreciation for the implementation of this workshop. “This activity is very useful for our students. In addition to gaining valuable experience, they are also more familiar with and love their own culture,” he said.

At the end of the event, the students had the opportunity to showcase their learning in a short performance. This workshop is expected to be the beginning of a sustainable collaboration between the Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta and SMAN 1 Kasokandel in an effort to preserve and develop Indonesian traditional music.
