Yogyakarta, February 5, 2025 - The Ethnomusicology Department of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta recently held a traditional music workshop attended by students of SMAN 12 Pandeglang on Wednesday (5/2). Located in the Ethnomusicology campus complex of ISI Yogyakarta, the participants were invited to explore the rich musical culture of the archipelago through direct practice of three traditional music ensembles: Talempong, Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and Javanese Gamelan.
This one-day workshop was designed as a bridge between the younger generation, especially the students of SMAN 12 Pandeglang, and the cultural heritage of Indonesian music. This activity is also a concrete proof of the Ethnomusicology Department's commitment to the preservation of traditional music.
“We want to plant the seeds of love for traditional music in the hearts of the students. Not just knowing, but also experiencing firsthand the beauty and depth of these musics,” said the Head of the Ethnomusicology Department at ISI Yogyakarta when opening the event.
With intensive guidance from senior lecturers and students of Ethnomusicology at ISI Yogyakarta, the workshop participants were introduced to the basic techniques of playing these three traditional instruments. Interestingly, despite their first contact with these instruments, the students showed impressive adaptability.
“We were amazed by the captivation and learning spirit of the students of SMAN 12 Pandeglang. They are not only quick to absorb technical knowledge, but also show a deep interest in the philosophy and values behind each sound produced,” said one of the teachers.
SMAN 12 Pandeglang welcomed this initiative. “This experience has been invaluable to the development of our students” cultural insights. They now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the richness of Indonesian traditional music," said the Head of SMAN 12 Pandeglang.
The highlight of the event was marked by a mini performance by the participants who successfully played simple compositions of the three types of traditional music. The success of this workshop opens up opportunities for continued cooperation between the Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta and SMAN 12 Pandeglang in various activities to preserve and develop traditional music.
