SMAN 1 Suboh Situbondo Holds Traditional Music Workshop at Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta, May 8, 2025 - The Department of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta again became the center of traditional music exploration with the arrival of a group of students from SMAN 1 Suboh Situbondo, East Java in a traditional music workshop. The event, which took place on May 8, 2025, was a platform for students to deepen their understanding of Indonesia's rich musical traditions.

In this workshop, the students had the opportunity to play a variety of traditional musical instruments from Java, Sumatra, and Bali. With guidance from lecturers and students of Ethnomusicology ISI Yogyakarta, they not only learn to play musical instruments, but also understand the cultural, philosophical and historical values contained in each instrument.

This activity aims to foster appreciation for Indonesia's musical heritage and build a spirit of cultural preservation among the younger generation. High enthusiasm was seen from the students who actively participated and enjoyed hands-on experience in playing Javanese gamelan, talempong from Sumatra, and various Balinese instruments.

The Department of Ethnomusicology at ISI Yogyakarta continues to open space for visits and educational collaborations with schools to strengthen cross-generational understanding of the traditional music of the archipelago.
